W2 D5 A2 Leading by Example.

My random act of kindness.

I remember when I was little I went with my mum to countdown to do some shopping.

I wanted some lollies so after my mum paid for our shopping she gave me her change which was $2.

I walked back inside to get me some lollies but then I saw this old man sitting on the ground with a bowl, asking for money.

I felt sorry for the man so instead of buying some delicious yummy lollies I gave my $2 to the old man.

The old man said "thank you" and smiled happily.

The book I am going to review is Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone.

Image result for harry potter book 1Its about when a boy named Harry was born but then a evil presence was sensed and an evil wizard appeared named Voldemort, killing both Harry's parents. In an attempt to kill Harry, he disappeared leaving Harry with a lightning bolt scar.

He had to live with his only family left, which was the Dursleys, who were cruel people who only wanted to do nothing but torture Harry.

MY SHORT STORY

Yesterday on a fine sunny morning we were packing our stuff ready to go to the beach. I couldn't wait for my toes to touch the golden sand and the waves from the glimmering sea to splash on me.

We finished packing and went off to go pick up my cousin before going to the beach to have double the fun. It was fun until my puppies started to bark and cry for food like they have never eaten before.

Once we feed the pains in the neck we finally reached our destination; The BEACH!

I ran over to see the sand as golden as a trophy, the shells as sharp as prickles, and the sea as blue as the sky. Well, if there was a sea. The tide was out and the water was as far as an endless hallway. All there was left was a a dry desert with no hydration.

My mum setup our resting area near a beautiful palm tree swaying its leaves in the direction of the wind.

After eating delicious food from my dad we thought it was time to go home and have a shower.

New $10 bank note

I think that we should replace Kate Sheppard's picture on the $10 note with Lisa King's picture.

She is the founder of Eat My Lunch.

Denied a loan from the bank, told by her friends the idea would never work and faced with naysayers every step of the way.
This fueled Lisa to go out and actually prove to herself and everyone that this could work.

She is  committed to her business model: to give a free lunch to a child in need for every packed lunch a customer purchases.

Ms King has grown from a home business to today boasting 45 staff throughout Auckland and Wellington.

In that time they've given more than 920,000 lunches to kids across 82 schools in Auckland, Hamilton and Wellington.

For this I think she is deserving and an inspirational women.

W2 D2 A3 I have a dream

I have a dream

Problem: Fighting for equality (equal rights).

There were laws that kept black and white people separated. They went to different schools, used different toilets, and even sat in different parts of a bus and ate in different areas of a restaurant.
This was called segregation.

On 1 December 1955 , Rosa Parks boarded a bus in Alabama (USA).
At that time in Montgomery, seats at the front of buses were reserved for white passengers, and the seats at the back for black passengers
The bus quickly filled up and when a white man boarded, the driver told the African American passengers to give up their seats for him. Whilst the other black passengers obeyed, Rosa did not. The result? Rosa was arrested by the police and fined for breaking segregation laws! But Rosa refused to pay, and argued that it was the law that was wrong, not her behaviour.

On news of Rosa’s arrest, the black citizens of Montgomery came together and agreed to boycott the city’s buses in protest.
The boycott was managed by an organisation called the Montgomery Improvement Association, for which Dr Martin Luther King Jr was elected as leader.

Protesters stuck together and fought for their cause – and on 13 November 1956 their efforts were finally rewarded. After 381 days of boycotting the buses, the Supreme Court ruled that Alabama’s racial segregation laws were ‘unconstitutional’ – meaning they weren’t valid and should not be recognised. In light of such a wonderful victory, Rosa became known as “the mother of the civil rights movement”.

W2 D2 A2 School Strike for Climate

Climate change in Schools.

Things I learnt:

1. Greenhouse gases, which trap heat close to the earth’s surface (like a blanket), are the cause of climate change.
The most significant greenhouse gas is carbon dioxide, which has increased by more than 45% since the Industrial Revolution.

2. Australia is the world’s largest coal exporter. Burning coal is the primary cause of climate change.
If we account for all the fossil fuels that we export, Australia is the fifth biggest polluter in the world.

3. Australia is one of the most vulnerable countries to the impacts of climate change, which we are already experiencing in the form of increasingly dangerous floods, drought, fires and heatwaves.

I am going to help climate change by actually eating the food I am given instead of letting it go to waste.
