Cross - Linking Surgery
http://dmei.org/corneal-cross-linking
A year ago, I was diagnosed with an illness called Keratoconus.
It is a disorder of the eye which results in progressive thinning of the cornea.
A month ago, I had to have surgery on my left eye and the procedure is called Cross - Linking.
In corneal cross-linking, doctors use eyedrop medication and ultraviolet (UV) light from a special machine to make the tissues in your cornea stronger. The goal is to keep the cornea from bulging more. It's called “cross-linking” because it adds bonds between the collagen fibers in your eye.
Before this procedure, I was terrified because I have never had surgery before and my dad made me even scared because my dad said they are going to take my eyeball out even though they weren't.
My dad was joking, but I found it not funny at all.
On the day of surgery I had to be brave, my mum said this would help me to see better in the future.
I would like to drive a car some day and go to the movies with my cousins so I agreed.
It was quite a fast procedure, once i got the anesthesia put in my arm I just remember saying the ABC backwards then I woke up in a different room with a different Doctor.
It was all over and I did it!
My mum was so proud of me.
I felt so brave and happy that it was all done and there was no pain.
Hey Zayden,
ReplyDeleteIt's awesome to hear that you have received treatment and your eyes will be good for the future. I think it's great that you have shared this story about you, it's always really brave and powerful to share about the times when we felt scared.
I would think your dad was trying his best to make you feel at ease by a friendly joke and I hope you feel alright about that now. This is a great recount, you've told it well and the images are a great addition to tell the story. Awesome stuff Zayden.
See you in the comments.
Daniel :)
Hello Zayden,
ReplyDeleteI hope you are having an amazing day! I sure am. I think you were really brave then because getting surgery sounds scary. Once you have finished with surgery you realise that it is not bad. I also like how you gave a model of the eye to make the blog post more interesting. I have never gone through surgery and I never plan to. Maybe next time you could add a bit of back story to the activity. Overall, this is a phenomenal blog post! Keep up the astonishing work!
